Opihikao Coast, 11 x 14. Perched on the sea cliffs off the Red Road in Kalapana, just a few feet above the pounding surf, I didn't get hit by a wave until I was nearly finished. Totally exhilarating!
Tidal Bench Limu, 9 x 12. This is the view of the "other" side of the scene from my painting "Opihikao Coast," which I painted just a few weeks later. The energy of the this place is contagious - no matter how vibrant my colors were, they seemed subdued compared to the real place!
Distant Sail, 11 x 14. Painted at one of Hilo's beach parks, Wai'uli, on a brilliant day, with Mauna Kea in the background.
Quiet Dusk at Baby Beach, 8 x 10. One of my favorite places to paint! A little-known beach just Hilo-side of Onekahakaha provides a calm protected pool with the open ocean just beyond. I love painting here at dusk, the reflections on the water are always beautiful.
Pohoiki Sketch, 5 x 7. Brilliant color and lots of surf action inspired this paint sketch at Isaac Hale Beach Park in Puna.
Hakalau Beach, 5 x 7. A little known beach park is tucked at the bottom of Hakalau Gulch. With a quiet river, rowdy surf and steep cliff wall, it's a lovely place to paint on the Hamakua Coast.
Mamane Tree, 11 x 14 on birch panel. This was painted at Kilohana off of the Saddle Road, at about 7000 ft elevation. The Saddle runs between Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualalai volcanic mountains.
Egg Rock, 8 x 10 on birch panel. A beautiful beach park in Kalapana, MacKenzie's sea cliffs, iron wood trees, and rock formations were the subject for this painting.
Two Palms at Lavender Hour, 9 x 12. The end of a day painting at Richardson's Beach... I was carrying my gear back to my car when the sky show began. I set my easel up in the parking lot and fired this one off!
Daisies on the Saddle. 11 x 14. At 6000 feet elevation, Saddle Road paint locations offer a totally different kind of scenery than the lava rocks and surf of Hilo. Pines, red dirt, and very rarely, DAISIES!
Isaac Hale Beach Park, 9 x 12. Painted in Pohoiki along the famous Red Road between Kapoho and Kalapana. Turquoise water, golden limu, rocks of all colors, amazing scenery!
Waipi'o Valley, 8 x 10. A magical place on the Big Island, accessible only by 4 wheel drive. The river in the valley flows into the ocean over a beautiful black sand beach. Sometimes misty and cool, sometimes brilliant blue, Waipi'o is always stunning.
Pink Palms, 5 x 7. A long, hot, Kona day ended with this gorgeous display of color. Sunsets are a real treat for me (Hilo is big on sun RISES but sunsets are usually subdued).
Idaho Sunset 2, 8 x 10. A day of rain and temperatures in the 40s ended with a beautiful display of color. Painted near Idaho Falls. Brrrrr. Confession: this painting is currently on display at One Gallery in Hilo, titled "Hamakua Dusk."
Storm Clears, 9 x 12. Painted on the Saddle Road, near mm 26 at Kipuka Ainahou. The surrounding terrain is lava and dry brush, the greenery of the kipuka was initially my subject matter, until the light and cloud pattern in the sky stole the show.
Kipuka Ainahou, 9 x 12. A "kipuka" is a pocket of vegitation spared from the lava flow. Kipuka Ainahou is at about 6000 feet elevation, between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. The remains of an old rock wall caught my eye.
